Most tourists come to Kiev to see its beautiful old churches and other ancient places of historical interest. But Kiev was not only the capital of Kievan Rus but – for nearly 70 years – the 3rd biggest city of the Soviet Union. The Soviet Kiev tour is your chance to set your time machine to the year 1985 and discover key items of Kiev’s Soviet past.
The better part of our tour is dedicated to Kiev’s neomodernism; the most iconic period in Soviet architecture and urban planning. Around the globe, the post-war years were a period of optimism and extreme experimentation. On both sides of the cold war ideological divide, this optimism found its greatest expression. Architects often working in collaboration with artists attempted to create projects that were a synthesis of architecture and art – an approach to design that often didn’t sit well with the authorities.
You will find out about beautiful examples of Soviet neomodernism such as Arsenalna metro station – the deepest metro station in the world, The Institute of Information, Hotel “Salut” and “Kiev”, The Pioneers House, People`s Friendship Arch and many others.
